Super Bomberman 2 – Title screen
Title screen

An explosive multiplayer brawl where you plant bombs and blow away opponents in a maze.

Super Bomberman 2 built on the success of the first SNES entry and expanded the explosive action concept with new elements that cemented the Bomberman-style party game genre as a staple of 1990s home consoles. The basic principle stays the same – the player lays bombs, destroys breakable blocks in the maze, collects power-ups, and tries to outsmart opponents by blowing them up at just the right moment. The controls are simple and accessible, making the game an ideal choice for quick multiplayer bouts where several players gather around a single screen.

The second installment added new arena types, upgrades, and mechanics that enriched the combat system and gave the game more tactical depth than the original – players had to consider not only bomb placement but also which power-ups to collect and when to risk using them. The visual style is colorful and cartoonish, typical of the series, and the music accompanying each arena has a brisk tempo matching the fast pace of the matches. Besides the multiplayer mayhem, the game also offers a single-player story campaign, though it serves more as a bonus alongside the main draw of multiplayer competition.

Super Bomberman 2 is among the titles that, even years later, still work primarily as a party game for several people around one screen, and it's precisely in this respect that it retains its charm to this day.

Why play it: For groups of players looking for accessible, chaotic multiplayer fun on one screen, rather than fans of deep single-player stories.
