Riglord Saga
Riglord Saga, the Japanese edition of the reworked and graphically enhanced Der Langrisser, brings tactical battles fought on grid-based maps to the Saturn, where the player commands armies made up of various unit types and heroes with their own abilities, stats, and gradual class progression toward more advanced tiers. The story branches depending on which side of the conflict between warring factions the player chooses, leading to several completely different endings and significantly boosting replay value, while the battles emphasize positioning, terrain advantages, and unit synergy alongside resource management and recruiting new soldiers between fights.
The Saturn version benefits from sharper graphics and smoother battle animations compared to older versions of the game on 16-bit consoles, character portraits during dialogue are more detailed and colorful, and the music underscores a medieval-flavored fantasy atmosphere emphasizing the epic scale of great battles between kingdoms. The depth of the class system and the ability to transform units into stronger forms based on level reached and conditions met are among the most distinctive elements that set the game apart from simpler tactical RPGs of the era and give players room to experiment with different army compositions.
Riglord Saga was released only in Japan and remained largely unknown in the West outside the circle of importers and Langrisser series fans for a long time, yet it still ranks among the most technically accomplished tactical RPGs on the Saturn and a worthy representative of the whole series on the 32-bit generation of consoles. Today it will appeal mainly to players seeking deeper strategy titles with an emphasis on branching story and thoughtfully designed unit combat, although the language barrier remains a major obstacle to fully understanding it for many, and fan translations remain practically the only solution available to players outside Japan.
Why play: For fans of the Langrisser series and deeper tactical RPGs with a branching story, Riglord Saga is a worthy representative of the genre on the Saturn, even though the language barrier remains a major obstacle.
