A shmup where your ship attacks two altitude layers at once; an idea that transformed the genre.

A vertical shooter that refuses to fit into a single plane. Layer Section, known in Japan as RayForce and later on the Saturn as RayForce/Layer Section, ranks among the gems of arcade shmups whose idea sounds simple but in practice transforms the whole genre. The action unfolds on two altitude levels at once: your ship attacks enemies in your plane with classic shots, but the real magic happens below.

The key mechanic is the targeting laser system. When enemies fly in the lower layer, your reticle gradually marks them and, once released, a salvo of homing beams rains down on them. The more targets you manage to lock at once, the higher the combo and the more impressive the visual and point reward. The game thus forces you to constantly balance between immediate fire and patiently building a chain, which gives ordinary "shooting upward" unexpected tactical depth.

Visually RayForce draws on effects that were extraordinary for their time. Backgrounds scroll in multiple layers, the sense of depth and height is tangible, and the explosions of homing lasers cascading down onto swarms of targets are among the most satisfying moments the genre has offered. The soundtrack underscores the atmosphere of cold, mechanical warfare and completes the impression of a tight, focused experience.

The conversion for the SEGA Saturn confirmed that the console could faithfully bring arcade 2D battles into the living room. For shmup fans this game is one of the titles people bought a Saturn for, and its layered mechanic still inspires developers looking for ways to refresh a seemingly exhausted genre.

Why play: For the clever two-level targeting system that turns a classic vertical shooter into a game about building combos and strategically destroying enemies.
