The Persistence
The Persistence places the player aboard a spaceship whose crew has been genetically degraded by unstable cloning following a crash, and sends them through dark, procedurally generated corridors, collecting upgrades and either avoiding or directly confronting mutated creatures. The game combines elements of survival horror with a roguelite structure – with each death, the ship's layout is partially rearranged, which keeps tension high even across repeated runs and prevents relying on a memorized route. The player can defend against the mutants not only with weapons but also through stealth and distraction tactics, gradually finding genetic samples and materials that let them upgrade their character's abilities at the ship's vending machines, from movement speed to resistance to attacks.
The player's movement around the ship is handled through a combination of smooth walking and teleportation depending on preference, which was a relatively advanced approach to solving VR motion sickness for its year of release. The cramped, oppressive corridors of the ship, full of flickering lights and metallic sounds, create a strongly claustrophobic atmosphere, heightened by spatial audio – footsteps and the breathing of enemies must be tracked by ear as well as by sight, since they often approach from behind or from the sides, outside direct field of view. The main antagonist, who relentlessly pursues the player throughout the ship, additionally cannot be killed by ordinary means, forcing the player to rely on hiding and fleeing rather than direct confrontation.
The Persistence was received as one of the more ambitious horror titles on PSVR thanks to combining roguelite elements with a full-fledged sci-fi story, a combination that was relatively unusual for VR games at the time. The game was later also released on traditional non-VR platforms, which only confirmed that the core game system was strong enough even outside the headset, but the PSVR version remains cited as the most intense and atmospheric way to experience the ship Persistence.
Why play: For fans of sci-fi horror with a roguelite structure, where you never know what's lurking around the corner – the experience is most intense in VR, though the game works well outside the headset too.
