A tiny crow works as a clerk of Death collecting souls; a melancholic palette with a horror-tinged edge.

Death's Door casts the player as a small crow working as a reaper of souls for a bureaucratic office of Death, where humans and mythical beings alike must be processed after passing on just like at any other office — with queues and paperwork. When the soul the crow was sent to collect gets stolen, it sets out across strange kingdoms to reclaim it, uncovering along the way a dark story about immortality, power, and the cycle of life and death. Visually, the game combines a muted, almost melancholic palette with bold character stylization, giving it a distinctive, faintly horror-tinged, almost fairy-tale feel.

In terms of gameplay, it's an isometric action-adventure inspired by classics like Zelda and by soulslike games — combat demands precise dodge timing and combines melee attacks with spells such as fire or ice projectiles, while the world is full of environmental puzzles and hidden shortcuts linking the individual areas into one compact whole. Gradually acquiring new abilities and weapons opens up previously inaccessible places, encouraging the player to return to already explored locations in search of optional secrets. Boss fights, among which the eccentric Lord of Doors stands out, rank among the most highly praised elements of the game thanks to their readable attack patterns and a balanced yet genuinely challenging difficulty.

On PS5, Death's Door boasts a crisp image and stable performance that underline its carefully crafted atmosphere, accompanied by understated yet very effective music. The game from the small studio Acid Nerve, published under the Devolver Digital banner, was received upon release as one of the most delightful surprises of that year and is still held up today as an example of how limited resources can produce a game with perfectly balanced design, humor, and emotion, without the player ever feeling like the playtime is being artificially padded with unnecessary content.

Why play it: Anyone who appreciates a compact adventure free of unnecessary padding will find in Death's Door a perfectly balanced design, atmosphere, and humor from the small studio Acid Nerve.
