A futuristic anti-gravity racer with incredible speed, electronic music, and a striking visual style got a complete high-resolution graphical overhaul on PS3, as SCE Studio Liverpool revived one of Sony's oldest and most loyal sci-fi racing brands, dating back to the original PlayStation's launch titles. The game combined breakneck tracks full of turns, weapons for sabotaging opponents, and visually intoxicating motion-blur effects, making it one of the most audiovisually impressive titles available through PlayStation Network digital distribution.
The content was based on reworked tracks from previous portable entries, which felt like an entirely new game in their updated form. Controlling the ships required mastering air brakes on the rear triggers, carefully managing ship energy since every collision and every use of a shield drew from the same pool, and the ability to sacrifice a collected weapon in exchange for replenishing energy. Especially prized was a mode in which the ship constantly accelerates on its own and the player simply tries to stay on the track as long as possible at speeds where it becomes more about reflexes than classic racing. A soundtrack composed of electronic music from leading DJs heightened the futuristic atmosphere and became an inseparable part of the series' identity.
Critics praised the technical precision, the smoothness at sixty frames per second, and the value for money as a digitally distributed title, making it one of the most successful examples of the early digital economy on Sony consoles. The Fury expansion added further tracks and game modes, extending the title's lifespan even more, and the game became one of the technical benchmarks journalists used to test PS3 performance. WipEout HD showed that PlayStation Network could host technically demanding, fully fledged racing experiences, and cemented the series as a lasting part of the PlayStation brand's identity.
