The film adaptation combines a linear story with open-ended building of your own Toy Box playset.

Disney-Pixar Toy Story 3 is the official game adaptation of the animated film of the same name, developed in 2010 by Avalanche Software. The game combines a linear story mode that mirrors key scenes from the film with the more open Toy Box mode, in which players can freely build their own playset in the style of a western town according to their imagination, and gradually expand it with new buildings, characters, and attractions as they see fit.

In the story mode, players switch between Woody, Buzz, and other beloved toys as they attempt to escape Sunnyside daycare, where they end up after their owner Andy accidentally donates them to a local playroom full of spoiled toys and their tyrannical leader, the teddy bear Lots-o'-Huggin. While the movie campaign sticks to the plot and mirrors key scenes from the film, Toy Box offers sandbox freedom with its own side missions, building construction, item shopping, and horseback riding across an open prairie — an unusual and well-praised addition for a classic movie tie-in at the time of release, which were typically limited to a short linear campaign with no reason to replay.

The game targets primarily younger audiences and families; the controls are simple and accessible, the difficulty is mild, and the level design is colorful and clear, with a minimum of frustrating passages even for the youngest players. The combination of a familiar story from the film and the creative sandbox mode gives it a somewhat longer lifespan than typical movie tie-ins, which often end after a few hours of play and give no reason to return, while Toy Box invites repeated visits even after completing the main story.

Why play: For the Toy Box sandbox mode, which goes beyond the typical movie game adaptation.
