Disgaea D2: A Brighter Darkness
Disgaea D2: A Brighter Darkness is a direct sequel to the first game in the popular tactical RPG series from Nippon Ichi Software, taking players back to the Netherworld, this time several years after the events of the original game, with the demonic prince Laharl again in the lead role alongside the prisoner Etna and other familiar faces from the series who must deal with a new threat endangering their kingdom.
As a tactical RPG, the game builds on turn-based battles on grid-based battlefields, where the player positions units, makes use of the terrain's height differences, and employs series-specific mechanics such as throwing and stacking characters on top of each other to reach otherwise unreachable spots on the map, or combining several units at once to unleash more powerful attacks. Disgaea has long been known for its extreme depth and near-limitless character leveling, and D2 continues that tradition with the series' trademark black humor parodying classic fantasy clichés, along with an extensive system for upgrading characters, items, and special abilities that motivates dozens of hours of repeated play even after the main story is finished.
Reviews rated the game as a typical representative of the series – its humor, the depth of the combat and progression systems, and the amount of content for genre enthusiasts were all praised, though criticism pointed out that the game as a whole doesn't bring fundamentally new elements compared to earlier entries and will appeal mainly to loyal fans of the series rather than new players looking for an easier entry point into the genre. D2 thus fits into the long line of Disgaea installments that, thanks to their depth and distinctive humor, still hold a stable circle of devoted fans of tactical RPGs with a strong Japanese flavor. Despite its complexity and sometimes unwieldy number of systems to study, the game remains valued precisely for that combination of light-hearted humor and near-limitless room for building and upgrading your own army of demons, which no other series in the genre offers on a comparable scale.
