Dead Space: Extraction
Dead Space: Extraction from 2009 was an on-rails light-gun shooter that expanded the space horror of the Dead Space series with a prequel narrative set before the events of the first game aboard the mining ship Ishimura. The player followed a fixed path full of Necromorph monsters, aiming and shooting off enemy limbs just like in the main series, and followed the story from the perspective of a group of survivors whose fates intertwined with the later installments. Besides the shooting itself, the game also made room for exploring the surroundings, gathering resources, and reading text logs that fleshed out the atmosphere of the dying space station, setting it apart from other quick, disposable light-gun titles.
The original was made exclusively for Wii, where aiming was done by pointing the Wii Remote directly at the TV screen — this control style suited the on-rails shooter genre well and was one of the reasons the game received better reviews from critics than reception from the wider player base, which, partly due to its association with Wii, was slower to warm to it. The game didn't arrive on PlayStation 3 until 2011, when EA offered it as bonus content with the limited edition of Dead Space 2 and later also separately via the PlayStation Network, with precise aiming now handled by the PlayStation Move controller, offering similar accuracy to the Wii Remote.
The PS3 version also benefited from more powerful hardware — it offered sharper textures, higher resolution, and a more stable frame rate compared to the original, and it also gained trophy support, which the Wii lacked by design. For players without a PlayStation Move controller, the game was also playable with a standard gamepad, albeit with less precise aiming than with motion controllers, so most players seeking the full on-rails experience ultimately opted to get a Move controller. Thanks to its bundling with the Dead Space 2 edition, the game also reached a significantly wider audience than it had on Wii two years earlier.
Why play it: Thanks to its bundling with the Dead Space 2 edition and sharper graphics compared to the Wii original, this is the most accessible way to try this well-crafted on-rails shooter, ideally with a Move controller.
