A puzzle platformer about rewinding time, where death stops being a punishment and becomes a tool.

Braid is a puzzle platformer that at first glance resembles classic jump-and-run games, but within a few minutes reveals that its true subject is time. The player can rewind events at any moment, without limitation, so death stops being a punishment and becomes an ordinary tool for experimentation. Each world then adds its own rule to this basic ability: in one, objects glowing gold are immune to the rewinding of time; in another, time flows according to the direction the character moves; and in yet another, the player is chased by their own shadow, which repeats the previous attempt.

The puzzles rely on the player working these rules through to their logical conclusion, and solving them often requires a shift in perspective rather than dexterity. Puzzle pieces collected by the player form images that close out each world, and the story, told through short texts at the start of each chapter, remains deliberately ambiguous; it speaks of searching, regret, and what a person considers their own. The visual style resembles a painting with soft colors, and the music, composed of existing acoustic and string pieces, gives the whole a melancholic, dreamlike tone.

The game was originally released on a competing platform and arrived on PlayStation 3 later, but its reception was strongly positive everywhere, and Braid became one of the titles that, at the start of this period, convinced the public that small independent games could have artistic ambitions. Its influence on the following wave of indie creation is hard to overlook. Today, Braid remains a surprisingly powerful experience: short, precisely measured, and free of unnecessary filler, with puzzles that haven't aged because they aren't built on trends but on a clean, well-constructed idea.
