The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning
The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning marked a decisive restart of the popular platformer series, shifting from the colorful, humor-filled trilogy of the PlayStation era to a darker, more seriously toned fantasy epic aimed at slightly older players who had grown up with the original trilogy and expected more from the sequel than just casual fun. Krome Studios rewrote Spyro's origin from the ground up: instead of a pampered dragon growing up on an island, the protagonist grows up hidden among dragonflies, who conceal him from the world because of an ancient prophecy about his exceptional power and the destiny he is meant to one day fulfill.
Gameplay shifted closer to action-adventure, with emphasis on a more elaborate combat system — Spyro wields four elemental breaths (fire, ice, electricity, and earth), which he combines throughout the game with physical attacks and gradually unlocked combos into smoother and more effective chains. Flying alongside him is his loyal dragonfly Sparx, serving as a health indicator and a small combat helper collecting gems, while the story leads the player into a dark world ruled by the evil Cynder and her master, the powerful dragon Malefor. The level design alternates between more open exploratory passages full of hidden nooks and bonuses and more linear action sequences and combat arenas full of enemies.
The new art style, more serious tone, and professionally cast voice acting aimed to attract an older audience that had grown up with the original trilogy, without completely alienating younger players used to the lighter tone of the series' earlier entries. Reactions to this transformation were mixed — some fans appreciated the more ambitious storytelling and darker atmosphere, while others missed the humor, color, and lightness of the series' older entries. Even so, A New Beginning became a successful springboard for the trilogy's next two installments, which were gradually released on PS2 and, somewhat later, on Wii.
