Crash Nitro Kart
Crash Nitro Kart took the baton from the beloved Crash Team Racing of the previous generation and brought another round of arcade racing with characters from the world of Crash Bandicoot to the PlayStation 2. This time the player is abducted by an alien race that forces them to compete in a tournament across four galactic worlds, with victory deciding the fate of Earth — the premise serves mainly as a framework for a series of colorful, inventively designed tracks full of shortcuts and traps.
The core mechanics follow the proven kart-racing formula — collecting power-ups, drifting to charge a turbo boost, and using offensive and defensive items against opponents on the track. Nitro Kart added a vehicle upgrade system during the tournament and several tracks with alternate shortcuts that unlock only after meeting certain conditions, increasing the motivation to replay already-familiar circuits. Players could also choose from various characters with specific acceleration, handling, and top speed traits, allowing room for personal preference when building their own driving style. Visually, the game used the bright, vividly colored environments typical of the whole brand, and the music accompanied each world with its own distinctive, fast-paced theme.
Reactions at the time were generally positive — the game was praised for delivering honest racing fun and a variety of tracks, though it was often compared to Mario Kart, against which it came across as a solid but less innovative alternative. The split-screen multiplayer mode was one of its beloved features, which made the game a frequent choice for parties with friends outside the main tournament mode. For fans of Crash and arcade racing in general, Crash Nitro Kart remains to this day an enjoyable, fast-paced diversion that, on PS2, rounded out a wide selection of kart racers alongside rival brands and offered familiar characters in a new, sporting context.
Why play: For fans of Crash and arcade racing, it offers fast fun with familiar characters and a beloved split-screen multiplayer, even though it comes across as less innovative next to Mario Kart.
