Star Trek: Deep Space Nine – The Fallen

Shooter (FPS) 1999 The Collective Star Trek ⏱ Medium · ~3–10 h

The dark Deep Space Nine station as a first-person shooter with a tricorder at hand.

The Deep Space Nine station was one of the darkest and most complex corners of the Trek universe – and this game tried to turn it into a tense first-person action experience. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine – The Fallen brings the player right into the events surrounding the beloved series as a first-person action shooter.

The game is built on FPS gameplay, but complements it with exploration, the use of the tricorder and interaction with the world in Star Trek style. The player takes on the role of the station's key characters and moves through missions tied to a story rooted in the show's lore. It is therefore not purely mindless action – part of the experience is also solving situations, moving through environments familiar from the source, and an effort to preserve the Trek atmosphere, where violence is the last resort.

On the PlayStation it was an ambitious attempt to transfer an expansive and often philosophical series into a brisker game format. For fans the main draw was that they could step into the shoes of the Deep Space Nine heroes and live out their own adventure in settings they knew intimately from television. The story setting and fidelity to the environment were key to the whole project.

The Fallen is an interesting example of how, at the turn of the millennium, first-person shooters tried to link action with storytelling and a licensed world. It was not always an easy pairing, but the ambition to offer something more than mere shooting is likeable.

Why play it: If you enjoy Deep Space Nine and want to explore its world actively, from a first-person perspective, this action game offers you a story-driven trip to the familiar station.
