MediEvil 2
MediEvil 2 is a sequel to the beloved action platformer with a horror twist, transporting the skeletal knight Sir Daniel Fortesque from the dark medieval land of Gallowmere to Victorian London at the end of the nineteenth century. The player once again makes their way through atmospheric levels full of undead enemies, this time enriched with steampunk elements and period London settings — foggy alleys, cemeteries, museums, and sewers seeping with the dark magic of a new villain threatening the peaceful city. Combat combines melee slashing weapons with firearms and magical items that Daniel gradually unlocks and upgrades, with some weapons requiring experimentation to reveal their hidden effects.
Compared to the first game, the sequel offers more elaborate level design with a greater emphasis on platforming elements, environmental puzzles, and interaction with the surroundings, while the humorous, self-deprecating tone of the previous installment remains intact — Daniel is still a silent skeleton without a lower jaw, communicating only through gestures and expressions. The visual presentation makes full use of the PlayStation's capabilities to create a dense, gothic atmosphere, complemented by bold orchestral music that heightens the feeling of a dark fairy tale rather than actual horror and nicely complements the Victorian settings of the individual levels.
Reviews of the sequel were positive, with many players and critics considering it more mature and technically polished than the original, even though it never achieved quite the same cult status as the first game. MediEvil 2 expands the character's world with new settings and characters without abandoning the basic charm of the first game — humor, atmosphere, and honest platforming action. Today it is seen as an underappreciated sequel that deserves the same attention as the game that preceded it, and fans of the series still like to point to it as proof that Daniel Fortesque had more than one adventure in him.
Why play it: If you enjoyed the first game, this more mature and technically polished sequel deserves the same attention, even though it never quite achieved its cult status.
