Colony Wars
Colony Wars is a space combat game from Psygnosis, released on PlayStation in 1997, offering players a sprawling interstellar war between the Empire and the rebel League. The player takes the controls of a fighter craft and progresses through a career from rank-and-file pilot to commander of their own fleet accompanied by loyal wingmen, completing missions full of battles against enemy fleets, convoy escorts, or the destruction of massive capital ships, while the choice of sides and individual decisions shape the further direction of the branching campaign and lead to different endings of the whole conflict and different fates for the galaxy.
The game was built on precise, physically grounded ship handling in open space, where the player has to learn to work with inertia, shield energy, and weapon overheating. Missions play out against sprawling, visually spectacular backdrops of planets, nebulae, and asteroid fields, which together with an epic orchestral soundtrack created the cinematic feel of a space opera. The branching story, where the outcome of one mission determined which mission followed, was an unusual feature for its time and gave the game replay value, since the player could try a different sequence of missions on repeat playthroughs and unlock different ships.
Technically the game was among the audiovisual highlights of its time on PlayStation and demonstrated what the console was capable of in the space-simulator genre. Reviewers praised the atmosphere, the music, the elaborate difficulty, and the demanding combat, which required patient mastery of the controls and tactical thinking, thanks to which Colony Wars received two sequels that developed the same concept of a branching conflict. Today it is regarded as one of the best space titles of the PlayStation generation and a pleasant reminder of a time when the space-simulator genre was flourishing on consoles.
Why play it: For fans of space simulators looking for an audiovisual highlight and demanding tactical combat that earned two sequels and still ranks among the best on PlayStation.
