One of the first turn-based tactical RPGs on PlayStation; it reached the West years later.

Arc the Lad was among the first turn-based tactical RPGs to earn a reputation as a cult classic on PlayStation, even though it reached the West only after a long delay, in the form of a later compilation released many years afterward. The game builds on the classic concept of battles on grid-based battlefields, where the player moves units, uses their differing abilities, and exploits the tactical position of the terrain to defeat enemies across clearly designed missions. The story follows the young hero Arc, who, together with a group of friends and demonic companions, tries to face a growing threat endangering his home continent, gradually uncovering a conspiracy reaching all the way to the government itself and its hidden interests.

The combat system emphasized turn planning, distance management, and combining characters with different combat profiles, from melee fighters through mages and archers to support characters capable of healing allies. The game also stood out in that the player's roster of companions could include tamed monsters summoned into battle, adding another layer of strategy when assembling a team for individual missions and their varied objectives. The visuals are characterized by tidy 2D sprites on simple but functional battlefields, complemented by music that rounded out the atmosphere of fantasy adventure and rising tension between chapters.

Arc the Lad was well received in Japan as a beloved representative of the tactical RPG genre and laid the foundation for an entire series, which continued on PlayStation with further entries, expanding the story with new characters, locations, and a more elaborate combat system. For Western players it long remained hard to obtain, which only enhanced its reputation as a rare classic, and it is still valued today by tactical RPG fans as an important milestone of the genre on this console and as the forerunner of more successful sequels.
