Aerodynamics computed from a physical model, not from tables; also popular for pilot training.

X-Plane 11 is a civilian flight simulator from studio Laminar Research that stands apart from competing titles primarily through its use of so-called blade element theory to calculate aerodynamics, meaning aircraft behavior is derived from a physical model of their construction rather than from pre-programmed tables. This makes the flight simulation especially credible even for unusual or non-standard damaged aircraft, which has won it favor not only among enthusiasts but also among part of the professional flight training community, which uses the simulator as a supplement to conventional training.

The game offers a wide range of civilian aircraft, from small sport planes to airliners, and allows detailed simulation of systems, weather, and ground traffic at airports, including realistic behavior in strong wind or crosswind conditions. Scenery covers the entire surface of the planet, though the level of detail across regions is uneven and is significantly expanded by an active community creating add-on scenery, aircraft, and flight planning tools. The user interface and settings are fairly technical and less approachable than in competing titles, reflecting the game's focus on simulation accuracy over friendliness, and newcomers may need a while to find their way around the settings.

The sound design and flying atmosphere are subordinated primarily to the credibility of the simulation rather than to visual stylization, and the game therefore comes across as matter-of-fact and technical, more like a professional tool than an entertainment product aimed at a broad audience. Thanks to its openness to modification and its certification for part of flight training, X-Plane 11 earned respect as a serious simulation tool, not just an entertainment title. Even after the release of its successor, X-Plane 12, the eleventh installment remains popular thanks to its lower performance requirements and the extensive library of existing community add-ons, which are not yet fully available for the newer version.

Why play it: For players who prefer a matter-of-fact, technically credible flight simulation over visual stylization, and who benefit from the extensive library of community add-ons still missing from the newer X-Plane 12.
