World of Warcraft
World of Warcraft was released in 2004 and became the defining MMORPG of its generation. Players choose between the Alliance and Horde factions, go through dozens of races and classes, and complete quests across the vast fantasy world of Azeroth, which continues the earlier Warcraft strategy series. Compared to the MMOs of the time, the game offered a much more accessible interface, a clear quest system with objectives clearly marked on the map, and a smoother pace of progression, which drew in even players who had never played an online RPG before. The social side was also crucial - guilds, group dungeons, and massive raids for dozens of players, where the roles of tank, healer, and damage dealers had to be coordinated into a functioning whole, and it was precisely this cooperation that turned playing into a long-term social ritual, not just solitary quest completion.
Technically, the game relied on stylized, colorful graphics that remained playable even on weaker hardware, which, in contrast to more realistic and demanding competitors, was another reason for its mass appeal. The atmosphere of individual regions, from gloomy swamps to snowy mountains and desert plains, was well underscored by music and sound design that adapted to the character of the landscape and the time of day. World of Warcraft was further expanded by regular expansion packs that brought new continents, storylines, and higher character levels, and the game gradually transformed without losing its core identity - old areas were also occasionally reworked to match the current state of the story.
The contemporary reception was extremely positive, and the title quickly became the most-played MMORPG in the world, which influenced the direction of the entire genre - many competitors subsequently tried to imitate its accessibility and quest structure without achieving comparable success. Even today, after more than two decades of continuous operation, World of Warcraft remains active with a steady community of players and is rightly considered one of the most influential titles in the history of online games, one that fundamentally shaped the idea of what an MMORPG should look like and how it should work.
Why play: For players eager to experience a title that set the bar for the entire MMORPG genre for two decades and still holds a massive, actively engaged player community today.
