Historical China of the Three Kingdoms, with an emphasis on charismatic heroes and diplomacy.

Total War: Three Kingdoms leaves the fantasy setting behind and returns the series to history, albeit heavily stylized — the player commands one of the factions fighting for China at the end of the Han dynasty, during the era of the legendary Three Kingdoms story. Instead of anonymous generals, the game features charismatic heroes such as Cao Cao, Liu Bei, or Sun Jian, each with their own traits, relationships, and combat abilities, capable of deciding a battle through a personal duel with the enemy commander. The game offers two modes: the more realistic Records, closer to historical sources, and the more colorful Romance, inspired by the famous novel, where heroes fight as near-superhuman warriors.

The campaign places greater emphasis on diplomacy, marriages, conspiracies, and building personal relationships between rulers than earlier series entries, for which The Creative Assembly created an elaborate system of faction traits and interpersonal bonds. Battles remain real-time with tactical unit control, but hero duels and their individual abilities add a strong RPG dimension. The visual style and music draw on Chinese aesthetics and period motifs, setting the game noticeably apart from its European-flavored predecessors.

Three Kingdoms became one of the series' most commercially successful entries, drawing in players who had not previously engaged with either the fantasy world or the European history of Total War. It showed that the brand could work outside its established settings, provided it offered a sufficiently distinct approach to diplomacy, characters, and storytelling.

Why play it: For players who want turn-based strategy with striking heroes, diplomacy, and a duel-based combat system, set in a historically inspired China of the Three Kingdoms.
