Silent Hunter 4: Wolves of the Pacific
Silent Hunter 4: Wolves of the Pacific moved the proven submarine warfare simulation from the Atlantic to the Pacific and gave the player the choice of commanding an American or Japanese submarine across a vast Pacific theater. Instead of convoys sailing through cold northern waters, the player deals with long transits across open ocean, hunting for enemy merchant and warships, and deciding when to risk an attack and when to dive and wait for a safer opportunity instead. The choice of side also fundamentally changed the perspective on the war itself, since the Japanese campaign put the player in the role of defending their own supply lines.
The game builds on the mechanics of the previous entry — manual torpedo targeting, crew management, submarine damage and changeable weather — and expands them with a dynamic campaign following the key points of the Pacific front from the attack on Pearl Harbor onward. The rendering of the ocean and lighting conditions under tropical sun or during a storm was among the best of its time, and together with atmospheric music it heightened the sense of loneliness on long patrols far from the home port. The length of individual voyages and the need to monitor fuel and crew oxygen supplies also added an element of logistical planning that other simulators of the time did not emphasize as much. Community modifications once again pushed the game toward greater realism and filled in a number of missing details, including more historically accurate ship models.
The game was received as a worthy expansion of the series into a new setting, though some players had reservations about period technical shortcomings. Even so, it became a popular choice for those who wanted to experience the naval war from both the Japanese and American perspectives. Today it is valued above all for the atmosphere of the vast Pacific and for its long, meditative patrols that contrast with the tense moments of torpedo attacks.
Why play it: For players wanting to experience the naval war from both the Japanese and American perspectives, who will appreciate the atmosphere of the vast Pacific and the contrast between long patrols and tense torpedo attacks.
