Romance of the Three Kingdoms IX
Romance of the Three Kingdoms IX from 2003 returns to the series' traditional model of managing a whole territory instead of a single character, and at the same time brings a substantial change to the battle map. For the first time, fights take place directly on the large map of the entire province instead of on a separate tactical plan, which makes it possible to follow the movement of armies in a more realistic context and to plan campaigns over longer distances.
As ruler, the player manages the economy, diplomacy and military of their territory, recruits and promotes generals according to their abilities, and tries to gradually expand their influence until they unite all of China under one rule or at least hold their domains against neighbouring enemies. Part of the management is also building infrastructure such as roads and ports, which speed up the movement of troops and trade caravans between the individual cities. The ninth instalment emphasises a smoother link between the strategic and tactical layers of the game, so the player switches less between different screens and has a better overview of the overall situation at the front, including the movement of enemy armies in real time. The artificial intelligence of rival states has been improved compared with earlier instalments, so rivals react more actively to the player's moves and try to expand their own domains at the expense of weaker neighbours.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms IX is often cited by fans as the instalment that successfully merged the traditional elements of the series with a more modern approach to depicting battles, and many players still consider it one of the most technically accessible entry points for newcomers who want to get to know classic Koei strategy without the excessive complication of newer instalments with dozens of interlinked systems. The ninth instalment thus remains a popular choice for players who want to spend dozens rather than hundreds of hours building an empire while not losing the key systems of the series.
