A time-loop adventure where the solar system ends in a supernova every 22 minutes.

Outer Wilds casts the player as a young astronaut from a small alien civilization who sets out to explore a solar system full of mysteries — only to discover they are caught in a time loop: every twenty-two minutes the solar system ends in a supernova, and the player wakes up again by the campfire at the start. The goal isn't to survive, but to gradually discover and understand — using knowledge gathered in previous loops, the player pushes further and further, unlocking new locations and piecing together the fate of the long-vanished Nomai civilization.

Gameplay is built on free exploration with no hand-holding whatsoever: every planet has its own physical quirk, whether that's shifting gravity, thickening sand, or cyclones that carry the player between bodies. All progress is purely informational — no new abilities or equipment, just knowledge and understanding of the universe's mechanisms, which the player records in a ship's log linking the individual clues together. The audio, with guitar by the campfire and a melancholic atmosphere, heightens the sense of loneliness and wonder at discovery.

Among the planets, the player uncovers the remains of the ancient Nomai civilization, their space observatories, and records of the Ash Twin Project, with understanding this legacy being the only way to reach the core of the mystery behind the time loop's origin. The paid expansion Echoes of the Eye then deepened the whole concept further by adding another, darker and harder-to-uncover layer of story.

After release, the game was hailed by critics as one of the most original gaming experiences of its generation, praised for its narrative structure, elegant puzzle design, and the emotional impact of its ending. It won numerous game-of-the-year awards, including recognition as best game on several prestigious lists, and the Echoes of the Eye expansion only deepened its reputation. To this day, Outer Wilds is cited as an example of a game that cannot be experienced the same way twice, and as proof that discovery and curiosity alone can be a powerful enough game mechanic.

Why play: For players open to exploration and curiosity as the core game mechanic, ideally without any spoilers beforehand — an experience that cannot be lived the same way twice.
