IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover
IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover moved the series from the Eastern Front to the Battle of Britain and at the same time introduced an entirely new graphics engine meant to replace the aging technology of the earlier games. The game focuses on aerial combat between the RAF and the Luftwaffe over southern England and the Channel, offering iconic aircraft such as the Spitfire, Hurricane, Messerschmitt Bf 109, and bombers like the He 111 and Junkers Ju 87. In addition to flying missions, it also lets players control ground and naval anti-aircraft defenses, an unusual added feature for its time that lets the battle be seen from the defenders' perspective on the ground as well.
The release was accompanied by a considerable number of technical problems, performance drops, and bugs that damaged the game's initial reception and led to a long series of fixes lasting many months after launch. At the same time, the flight and damage model was among the most sophisticated of its era, offering a very detailed simulation of how aircraft behaved under various kinds of structural and powerplant damage. Visually, even after years of patches, the game offered impressive views of the southern English countryside and the sea surface of the Channel, which in many respects surpassed the earlier games in the series.
Through successive updates and later unofficial community modifications, stability and playability improved significantly, and the game eventually found a solid core of fans who appreciated the depth of its simulation. Cliffs of Dover is viewed today as an ambitious but troubled release, whose technological foundation nonetheless later served as a springboard for the new generation of the series — Battle of Stalingrad and the titles that followed it. For anyone interested in the Battle of Britain, it remains, despite its flaws, one of the few detailed simulators devoted to that particular subject, and its development is still followed by later community patches that keep adding aircraft and fixing remaining shortcomings.
Why play it: For those interested in the Battle of Britain who will appreciate one of the few detailed simulators on the subject, even though it took later community patches to bring the game to stable playability.
