The successor to the legendary Warcraft III mod DotA; 5 vs 5 players fight to destroy the Ancient.

Dota 2 is the successor to the legendary Warcraft III mod Defense of the Ancients and ranks among the most complex team games ever released on PC. Two teams of five players choose from more than a hundred heroes with completely different abilities and try to destroy the enemy base (the Ancient). The path to victory runs through farming gold and experience along three lanes, fighting for map control, buying items, and coordinated team fights, where both mechanical skill and team strategy, plus knowledge of hundreds of interactions between abilities, are decisive.

Technically, the game runs on the Source 2 engine, which replaced the original Source engine in 2015 and brought better graphics, physics, and content-creation tools, including a Workshop with cosmetic add-ons. The music and sound design underscore the epic character of the fights, with each hero having a distinctive visual and audio presence that helps players orient themselves in the chaos of the late game. Dota 2 is free to download and is funded by the sale of cosmetic items and battle passes.

Its competitive scene is among the oldest and most prestigious in all of esports - the pinnacle is the annual The International tournament, whose prize pool has long ranked among the highest in video game history thanks to community participation in funding through battle pass sales. For spectators, Dota 2 is easy to follow thanks to a clear camera system, a minimap, and commentators who explain the hero draft and key decision-making moments, such as the timing of group pushes (rotations) or the decision to defend or give up a defensive tower. The game has fundamentally shaped the entire MOBA genre and is still considered one of the deepest strategy games of the present day, because the number of possible combinations of heroes, items, and game situations is practically inexhaustible.

Even more than ten years after release, Dota 2 remains a regularly updated game with active developer support, new heroes, and seasonal game modes. Its high barrier to entry - the need to know dozens of heroes, hundreds of items, and their mutual interactions - gives it a reputation as difficult to access for newcomers, but at the same time this very depth keeps a long-standing and loyal community of players and spectators around the world glued to their screens.

Why play it: For players willing to master dozens of heroes and hundreds of items, even more than ten years on it offers a depth that still keeps a loyal community of players and spectators around the world engaged.
