Star Trek: Klingon Academy – In-game
In-game

The same training as Starfleet Academy, but from the perspective of the aggressive Klingon Empire.

Star Trek: Klingon Academy turns the perspective familiar from Starfleet Academy on its head — this time the player doesn't train with Starfleet but with the Klingon Empire, learning to pilot Klingon battle cruisers, including their signature weapons and cloaking devices. The 2000 game emphasizes a more aggressive, more direct style of combat befitting Klingon warrior culture, both in mission design and in the tone of the narrative, the dialogue, and the way superiors evaluate the cadet's performance and progress through the ranks.

Unlike the Starfleet training in the previous game, there's a clear emphasis here on honor and personal courage as part of the cadet's evaluation — missions aren't just about technical skill, but also about how the player behaves in morally charged situations typical of Klingon culture, where cowardice is punished just as harshly as a tactical mistake. The simulator portion of the game remains built on cockpit ship combat with a fairly realistic damage and maneuvering model, similar to Starfleet Academy, but with different ships, different tactics, differently balanced difficulty, and an emphasis on crushing, direct assault instead of careful defense.

The game fits into a series of late-1990s Star Trek simulators built on a similar engine, but each focused on a different faction and a different angle on the space conflict, together forming a kind of unofficial trilogy of perspectives on the same era of the galaxy. For the Klingon perspective specifically, it remains to this day one of the few titles that covers it so thoroughly and lets the player experience the war through the other side's eyes, instead of reducing the Klingons to just a background opponent.

Why play it: For players who enjoyed the Starfleet training in Star Trek and want to experience the same type of game from the perspective of the tougher, honor-driven Klingon side, this time without regard for Starfleet's rules of engagement.
