Comanche 4
Comanche 4 from 2001 marked a fundamental technological turning point for NovaLogic's helicopter simulator series. Previous entries were built on the studio's characteristic Voxel Space technology, which produced distinctively plastic, destructible terrain even without a 3D accelerator, but by the turn of the millennium voxel rendering could no longer compete with the polygon engines of rival games. NovaLogic therefore switched Comanche 4 to fully polygonal, accelerator-driven 3D graphics, giving the game a more modern look but stripping it of the previous entries' unique visual identity.
The player once again takes control of the RAH-66 Comanche attack helicopter through a series of missions set in a fictional Middle Eastern conflict, with the game simplifying its controls toward more accessible action and focusing on cinematically staged missions with voiced dialogue and a narrated story between tasks. Multiplayer modes remained, though with a smaller footprint than in the earlier voxel-based entries.
For many longtime fans this was a controversial step - Comanche 4 was technically in step with its era, but it lost precisely what had previously set the series apart from competing flight games.
Compared to the older Comanche 3, the game also made things easier for new players - instead of a complex simulator, it offered a more straightforward, action-oriented pace closer to arcade flight games, emphasizing spectacular combat and Hollywood-style missions. The title thus stood on the border between a traditional military simulator and more accessible action, earning it mixed reactions from both pure-simulation fans and players looking for lighter entertainment.
Why play it: For players who want to see how NovaLogic's legendary voxel series coped with the arrival of polygonal graphics - more accessible, more cinematic, but without its old visual signature.
