Another take on the AH-64D Longbow, this time from veteran studio Digital Integration.

Apache Longbow offered players another take on the AH-64D Apache attack helicopter with the Longbow radar system, this time from the pen of Digital Integration, a studio with long-standing experience developing flight and helicopter simulators. The game focused on realistic modeling of helicopter flight, radar operation, and guided anti-tank missile fire, with the campaign offering a sequence of missions set in modern crisis scenarios. Players could choose between simplified controls for a quick entry into the game and a fully simulation-based model that required mastering a complex cockpit interface. Emphasis on the tactics of low-altitude flying, hiding behind terrain, and precise attack timing were typical traits of helicopter simulators of the era, and Apache Longbow handled them with due care. The campaign offered progressively more demanding missions, in which players had to contend with increasingly strong air defenses and plan their approach routes to the target.

The graphical rendering of terrain and hardware matched the standards of the late nineties, and the game supported the 3D accelerators of the time, which kept missions with larger numbers of enemy vehicles running smoothly. The sound design - the rumble of the engine, warning systems, and missile launches - complemented the tense atmosphere of combat missions flown low over terrain well. The game joined a range of helicopter simulators that competed for the attention of fans of precise military simulations on PC in the second half of the nineties.

Apache Longbow is remembered today as one of the lesser-known but solidly crafted helicopter simulators of its time, one that stood in the shadow of the more popular Jane's and Comanche series. For genre fans it's interesting precisely as an alternative take on the Apache attack helicopter, crafted by a different studio with its own approach to realism and controls.

Why play: As an alternative take on the Apache attack helicopter from a studio other than Jane's or Comanche, it will mainly appeal to players who want to compare different approaches to realism and controls.
