Neo Turf Masters

Golf in the arcade? It sounds like a contradiction in terms — and yet Neo Turf Masters from 1996 is one of the most addictive sports games the Neo Geo cabinet ever offered. Studio Nazca (under the SNK banner) showed here how to make golf fun even for someone who has never held a club in their life.

The secret lies in a brilliantly simple three-click control system: the first click starts the power meter, the second locks it in, and the third sets the accuracy and spin of the shot. It is instantly understandable, yet it hides surprising depth — mastering the wind, the slope of the green and the right timing of your swing takes feel and practice. This elegant balance between accessibility and precision is the whole magic of the game.

Visually it is a beauty — colourful, clean and sunny presentation, six courses scattered across the whole world, and fluid animation that turns every shot into a little pleasure. The game breathes that laid-back atmosphere where you just want to have a pleasant time, and yet it quietly draws you into the chase for a better score.

It is precisely this addictiveness that makes Neo Turf Masters a legend. It is the ideal game for short rounds as well as head-to-head duels, where every well-placed shot brings a smile and every botched one an angry grumble and an immediate „one more time“. You do not need to be a golf fan — the game wins you over all on its own.

Among connoisseurs of the Neo Geo catalogue, Neo Turf Masters is regularly cited as the pinnacle of arcade golf and proof that even a seemingly placid sport can spark a genuine addiction in the arcade.

Why play it: The best arcade golf ever — brilliantly accessible, beautiful and frighteningly addictive, fun even for complete non-fans of the sport.
