The Last Blade

Fighting 1997 SNK ⏱ Short · up to ~3 h 👥 1–2 · versus

A katana instead of fists and the twilight of the Bakumatsu; a melancholic, unmistakably Japanese fighting game from SNK.

While most fighting games on the Neo Geo settled duels with fists and kicks, The Last Blade drew a katana. Here SNK abandoned modern brawlers and transported us to the twilight of the Bakumatsu period, when feudal Japan was crumbling under the pressure of modernization. The atmosphere is melancholic, dignified, and unmistakable.

The core of the game is weapon-based combat, predominantly with cold blades, which places emphasis on timing and distance control. The Last Blade added an elegant system of two styles, Speed and Power, between which the player chooses depending on whether they want fast series of strikes or hard individual hits. Added to this is a defensive parry and spectacular special techniques, thanks to which the duels feel like the choreography of a samurai film.

Visually, the game belongs to the most beautiful that appeared on the Neo Geo. The backgrounds breathe the mood of the late Edo period, leaves fall, lanterns burn, and the scenery changes with the seasons. The sprite animation of the characters is fluid, and the sound design with traditional Japanese motifs underscores the serious, almost poetic tone of the whole game. SNK evidently cared not just about combat here but about mood.

The Last Blade received a direct sequel and gradually built a firm cult standing. Among SNK fans, it is regarded as a stylish alternative to the faster and more hectic fighting games, appreciated above all for its atmosphere and aesthetics. It is not the most famous title of its time, which makes its discovery all the more pleasant a surprise for retro players.

Thanks to reissues within collector's collections and on modern platforms, the game is easily accessible today. If you are drawn to a fighting game that bets on grace and mood instead of brute force, you have an ideal candidate.

Why play: An atmospheric katana fighting game set in the twilight of old Japan that bets on style, timing, and unforgettable aesthetics.
