SNK's 1995 release added a third fighting plane into the background and foreground, making battles more tactical than before.

With Fatal Fury 3: Road to the Final Victory from 1995, SNK pushed its flagship fighter a fundamental step further. The game abandoned the older two-line layout and introduced an improved three-lane system — characters could dodge into the foreground and background, giving the duels a tactical dimension that classic single-plane fighters didn't have.

The story again unfolded in the grim streets of Southtown, and around the Bogard brothers — Terry and Andy — gathered a gallery of distinctive fighters. Among the new faces were the Jin twins, whose subplot set in motion a story about mysterious scrolls. Visually it was a step forward, with larger, more detailed animated sprites and elaborate backgrounds that gave the game the series' typically gritty atmosphere.

For fans, Fatal Fury 3 is a key milestone: it was the direct predecessor of the legendary Garou: Mark of the Wolves, and many of its ideas later flowed into that game. Retro players love it for its bold combat system and for the unmistakable Southtown style that made the Fatal Fury series one of the pillar brands of the golden age of Neo Geo fighters.
