Golden Sun: Dark Dawn
Golden Sun: Dark Dawn returned after years of hiatus to the beloved Game Boy Advance duo, bringing the series to the Nintendo DS with a new generation of heroes, the children of the original protagonists. The story takes place thirty years later in a world that, after the release of alchemy, has been transformed by earthquakes and the emergence of new continents, and the player, together with a group of young adepts, sets out to discover the cause of these changes and repair the damage their parents inadvertently caused, even at the cost of traveling to distant and dangerous corners of the world.
The game retains the series' characteristic mix of battles and puzzles built around elemental Psynergy abilities, which the characters use not only in combat but also to solve obstacles on the map - freezing water, moving boulders, or lighting torches open the way to treasures and hidden shortcuts. Battles are turn-based, emphasizing combinations of elemental spells and summoning powerful Djinn, who temporarily change the characters' properties and allow dozens of different battle strategies depending on how the player distributes them among the characters. Visually the game moved to 3D environments with hand-drawn character sprites, giving the series a fresher look while retaining the recognizable style of previous entries.
Upon release, Dark Dawn was praised especially by loyal fans of the previous entries for returning to the beloved world and puzzle design, although some reviews pointed to an overly open ending that hinted at a sequel that took a long time to arrive. Nevertheless, the game is remembered as a solid continuation with carefully designed puzzles and a pleasant soundtrack that builds on the melodies of the Game Boy Advance era. For fans of the classic Golden Sun titles, Dark Dawn represents a welcome, if imperfect, reunion with the series on stronger hardware, one that brought back their beloved world even after a long hiatus.
