Treasure's crazy shooter where deflected rockets flood the screen with dozens of explosions.

Bangai-O Spirits is a crazy shooter from Treasure that brought the concept of the cult game Bangai-O from the Dreamcast and N64 to the Nintendo DS, in the form of a cross between an action shooter and a puzzle game. The player controls a robot capable of deflecting its own shots off walls and enemies, so within a few seconds the screen fills with dozens of deflected rockets homing in on hordes of opponents. The goal of each level is to destroy a set number of enemies or complete a specific task, with the game rewarding creative use of deflections, chaining combos, and quick route planning rather than brute force.

The Nintendo DS allowed Treasure to use the touchscreen for intuitive control of shot direction and movement at the same time — the player uses a finger to determine the trajectories of deflected projectiles while the buttons control the character. The game also includes a level editor that lets players create and share their own levels, extending the title's lifespan beyond the base campaign. Visually, Bangai-O Spirits is a clear 2D shooter with a huge number of effects on screen at once, accompanied by the energetic electronic music typical of Treasure's work.

Critics praised above all the originality of the concept and the depth it offers despite seemingly simple controls — it was one of the most inventive shoot 'em ups of its generation, though its steep difficulty curve and chaotic visual style put off some players looking for a more accessible experience. Bangai-O Spirits remains an example of how Treasure can reshape a traditional genre into a completely distinctive form, and it is still a sought-after piece among collectors and fans of inventive action titles for the DS today.
