A colorful platformer about a penguin, on which a young Hideo Kojima worked as a designer.

Few games hold as much history within them as Penguin Adventure – this colorful platformer for the MSX is one of the first titles worked on by a young designer whose name would later circle the entire gaming world: Hideo Kojima. Yes, the future creator of Metal Gear got his start, among other things, with the story of a brave penguin.

The game follows the action title Antarctic Adventure and pushes it further – a simple run becomes a fuller-fledged adventure. You guide the penguin Penta across levels in which you run forward, jump, dodge obstacles and enemies, and collect items. Compared to its predecessor, it adds more variety, shops, upgrades, and even hidden elements and surprises that make each playthrough a little richer.

For its time, this was a remarkably brisk and charming game. Pseudo-3D running into the depth of the screen, cheerful graphics, and catchy music made it a pleasantly accessible title that can nonetheless put up a challenge – and what is especially interesting, it hides alternate endings and unexpected moments that reward the player for exploring. These little touches hinted at a creative eye for detail that was only just beginning to develop at Konami at the time.

The context of its creation is crucial here. Konami was one of the leading studios on the MSX, and Penguin Adventure is a beautiful example of how, on this platform, even budding authors got room to work – authors who would later transform the entire industry. For fans of Kojima's work, this game is thus a fascinating first piece in the mosaic of one of the most influential game designers of all time.

Today Penguin Adventure remains a beloved piece of MSX history – a game that is fun in its own right but at the same time carries the mark of something greater. It is a reminder of an era when great talents were only just being born from seemingly innocent stories about penguins.

Why play: A charming retro platformer with hidden surprises, plus one of Hideo Kojima's early titles – a piece of gaming history in an adorable package.
