Horizon Chase
Horizon Chase is an open tribute to the era of 16-bit arcade racers from the late eighties and early nineties – games like Out Run, Top Gear, or Rush – and it borrows their simplicity and the joy of clean, uncomplicated racing. No car damage, no realistic physics, just smooth driving through landscapes full of colorful roads, mountains, and cities, controlled with a single finger: acceleration, braking, and simple steering are enough to make the game work perfectly even on the smallest phone screen. The scenery behind the wheel also changes depending on which continent the player is currently driving through, from deserts to snowy mountain roads.
The Brazilian studio Aquiris Game Studio released the game in 2015 and deliberately chose low-polygon graphics reminiscent of games from the 16-bit console era, complemented by bold, synthesizer-heavy music that only heightens the atmosphere of traveling across continents. Progression through the game happens through a series of cups and championships, where the player collects coins and unlocks new cars and tracks, with difficulty gradually rising through tougher opponents and tracks.
Unlike most of the competition in the genre, Horizon Chase relies more on a one-time purchase or a gentle free-to-play form without aggressive microtransactions, so it plays without constant spending pressure – a fundamental difference from Asphalt or CSR Racing. It's precisely this purity of experience and respect for retro aesthetics that made it a beloved title among players seeking nostalgia.
Why play it: For players who want clean, honest arcade driving without spending pressure and who love the aesthetics and music of retro racers from the eighties and nineties.
