A hexagonal turn-based strategy over sci-fi islands; buying and moving units across the grid.

Battle Isle is a turn-based hexagonal strategy game set on a fictional planet divided into a series of islands, over which two hostile factions fight, wrapped in a lightly sci-fi-flavored narrative framework, using tanks, artillery, helicopters, and other military units. The player progresses through a series of missions with their own maps and objectives, purchasing and deploying units according to the available budget at the start of each round and then moving them across the hexagonal grid to capture key positions or destroy enemy machinery, with stronger machines unlocking as the campaigns progress.

The combat system takes into account terrain type, range, and firepower of individual units, forcing the player to think through every move and combine different types of forces so they complement each other and cover each other's weak points. On the Amiga, the game excelled with clean, clear graphics with an easily readable map and units, a typical Blue Byte emphasis on functional design over visual showiness, and mouse control was intuitive even for players unfamiliar with the genre. The game also included a map editor, so the community could create their own scenarios and share them among themselves.

Restrained, atmospheric music complements the war theme well and underscores the strategic, deliberate pace of the game, where the outcome of a battle is often decided more by careful planning than by quick reactions. Battle Isle was well received at release as one of the most accessible hexagonal strategy games on the Amiga and laid the foundation for a successful series that continued with further installments and spin-offs set in the First World War. Today the game is valued as a solid and still playable representative of the turn-based military strategy genre and an interesting look at how hex-based battles evolved before the arrival of more sophisticated 3D engines and fully animated units, which only later generations of strategy games brought.

Why play it: For fans of hexagonal strategy games, Battle Isle offers accessible and well thought-out turn-based battles, and an interesting look at the genre's evolution before the arrival of more sophisticated 3D engines.
