Total War
Total War began in 2000 with Shogun: Total War from Creative Assembly, and from the start it combined a turn-based strategic map with sweeping real-time battles featuring thousands of units on screen. That fusion - empire-building, diplomacy and economy on the campaign map paired with tactical command on the battlefield - is the series' defining trait, setting it apart from both pure turn-based and pure real-time strategy games. Its atmosphere is built on historical, and later fantasy, settings that make every decision feel weighty, from managing a single unit to steering the fate of an entire civilisation.
Shogun was followed by Medieval: Total War and, in 2004, Rome: Total War, widely seen as one of the series' peaks for its polished battles, its striking ancient-Roman setting and a real leap forward in how units and terrain were rendered. The series kept evolving through Medieval II, Empire and Napoleon, on to Shogun 2, Rome II and Attila, before Creative Assembly later opened a fantasy branch with Total War: Warhammer. By fusing strategic and tactical layers so tightly, Total War left a deep mark on the whole genre of large-scale historical and fantasy strategy games, and it remains a reference point many similar titles are still measured against.
