Sniper Elite

Sniper Elite first appeared in 2005 from the British studio Rebellion with a clear ambition: turn sniping from a single ability of an action hero into the central discipline of an entire game. Set among the ruins of Berlin at the close of the Second World War, the debut introduced a bullet-cam following each shot to its target, gravity, distance and wind visibly bending the round's path, and an X-ray view into the wounded anatomy of a struck enemy - a combination that became the series' signature and set it apart from ordinary war shooters built around close-quarters combat.

The real turning point, though, came with Sniper Elite V2 in 2012. Rebellion effectively returned to the original premise, set it once again in Berlin in 1945, and refined the shooting system for the consoles of the day, finally bringing the series to a much wider audience. The game's success also made room for the Zombie Army spin-off, which carried the same weapons and mechanics into hordes of Nazi undead and showed how versatile the underlying design really was.

The following entries then gradually opened the series up to the world. Sniper Elite III in 2014 shifted the fighting to North Africa and replaced linear progression with larger sandbox missions offering multiple routes to each target; the fourth entry in 2017 carried that principle into Italy and expanded the maps with verticality, towers and rooftops; and Sniper Elite 5 from 2022, set in occupied France, added the asymmetric Invasion multiplayer mode, in which one player takes the role of an elite sniper hunted by a team of others. Patient observation of the terrain and planning an escape route, however, stayed at the core of the game throughout.
