MotorStorm
MotorStorm launched in 2006 as one of the PlayStation 3's launch titles and became the flagship racing series of the British studio Evolution Studios, exclusive to Sony platforms throughout its existence. Instead of classic road circuits, it offered wild off-road racing set in a desert canyon, where completely different vehicle classes shared the same track — bikes, quads, buggies, trucks and heavy monster trucks — each with its own strengths and weaknesses in mud, sand or rocky terrain, so choosing a vehicle mattered as much as riding style.
The series was defined by aggressive, chaotic racing full of crashes and vehicle destruction, thick dust and mud spraying across the screen, and tracks full of branching paths and shortcuts that only paid off for bolder, faster vehicles willing to risk a crash. The 2008 sequel, MotorStorm: Pacific Rift, moved the action to a tropical volcanic island with dense vegetation and rising hot ash, while 2011's MotorStorm: Apocalypse pushed racing directly into the ruins of an earthquake-hit city, where tracks literally crumbled beneath the wheels.
Alongside the main entries, a handheld title, MotorStorm: Arctic Edge, appeared on PSP and PS2, set in a snowy arctic region and developed by a different studio than the rest of the series. After Apocalypse the series went quiet for good and Evolution Studios moved on to other projects, but MotorStorm is still remembered as one of the standout exclusive racing brands of the early PlayStation 3 era, and an example of how far off-road racing could be pushed from classic road-racing simulations.
