Hyrule Warriors

Hyrule Warriors began as an unlikely crossover between two very different worlds: Omega Force's Dynasty Warriors series, built around clearing screens full of enemies, and the world of Zelda with its iconic characters and locations. The first game arrived in 2014 for Wii U, made by Omega Force in collaboration with Nintendo, and delivered exactly what the concept promised — Link, Zelda, Impa and Midna cut through hundreds of Ganon's soldiers while a tactical battle for forts and outposts unfolds across the map. The series is defined by simple combos, powerful special attacks and a steady unlocking of weapons and characters, which sets it apart from Zelda's usual puzzles and exploration and places it firmly among action arcades. Each playable character also wields its own weapon type with a distinct attack rhythm, so switching fighters changes the pace of play as much as the chosen map and mission objectives do.

The series then grew mainly through re-releases and one major spin-off. Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition (2018) gathered the content of the original game and its later expansions for Nintendo Switch and became the version most players returned to. The real turning point, though, was Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity (2020), a prequel to Breath of the Wild telling the story of the Great Calamity a hundred years earlier, with a much stronger focus on narrative, cinematic scenes and the four Champions. Thanks to its place between mainline Zelda entries and a later release for Switch 2, the series has kept the brand alive between main installments while also introducing many players to the musou genre who might otherwise never have tried it. The roster of playable fighters also kept growing through downloadable content and updates that added more characters, weapons and scenarios drawing on various games in the Zelda series.
