Just Dance 2
Just Dance 2 is a title that turned a seemingly simple idea into one of the biggest commercial phenomena of the entire console. The player holds the Wiimote in their right hand and mimics the dancer on screen; the game tracks the controller's movement and rates how accurately the player hits the choreography. No extra accessories, no rules to learn, just a song, a dancer's silhouette, and a strip of icons in the corner hinting at what's coming next. It's precisely this shameless simplicity that made the game a party staple even where most people present otherwise have no interest in video games.
The second installment significantly expanded the range of modes. It added a duel between two dancers, joint choreographies for pairs where each person dances a different line, and a mode focused on movement as exercise, which estimates energy spent and offers longer continuous routines. The songs cover both pop classics and hits of the time, and each has its own visual concept, colored background, and dancer costume. The game deliberately doesn't pretend to be a precise dance simulation; it mainly rates the movement of the hand holding the controller, which is a constant source of jokes, but also exactly why anyone at all is willing to give it a try.
Technically it's a very simple game built on filmed and stylized characters against colorful backgrounds, which can practically never slow down; the strength lies in the choreography and editing. The sound relies on licensed recordings and cover versions and is the main draw of the whole series. Contemporary reviews commonly acknowledged that as party entertainment the game works excellently, even though as a dance game the movement rating is only approximate. Today Just Dance 2 is still one of the fastest ways to get people up off the couch, and that's exactly what its creators were going for. Later sequels have since outdone it with newer songs and nicer production, but this installment is still remembered as the moment when an odd experiment turned into a brand that outlived even the console it was born on.
