An addictive tower defense game where plants defend the house from waves of zombies in the yard.

Plants vs. Zombies brought to the PlayStation 3 the immensely popular tower defense concept in which the player defends their house from waves of attacking zombies using an army of various plants arranged on a grid in the front yard. On the lawn grid, the player plants pea-shooters, sunflowers that produce the energy needed to buy more plants, or special units like the explosive cherry bomb or mobile cactus plants, all while gradually facing ever more inventive types of zombies — from slow walkers to ones armored with a bucket on their head, riding a vehicle, or bending the rules in joker-like fashion, such as a pole vaulter or a snorkeling zombie in the pool.

The gameplay is built on a simple but addictive principle of resource management and tactical unit placement, complemented by a lighthearted, humorous tone and cartoonish graphics that make the game feel friendly even to players who otherwise avoid strategy games. The PlayStation 3 version included the complete content of the PC original, including minigame modes, a Zen Garden editor for growing plants outside the main campaign, and unlockable plant types, making it a content-rich title at an affordable price on the digital market.

Plants vs. Zombies still ranks today among the most frequently cited and best-loved representatives of the tower defense genre overall, across platforms from computers through consoles to mobile phones. On the PlayStation Network, it became one of the most successful digitally distributed titles of its time and showed that even a seemingly unassuming strategy game can appeal to a much wider audience than the genre typically attracts, including players who otherwise skip console strategy games entirely.

A clear grid, easily readable icons for each zombie type, and the gradual, well-paced introduction of new plant and enemy types made for a pleasantly legible experience even for complete newcomers to the genre. It is precisely this ease of understanding, combined with its humorous, exaggerated tone, that has made the game one of the most frequently cited examples of so-called casual strategy titles of the entire generation.

Why play it: A clear grid, legible icons, and a humorous tone make Plants vs. Zombies an ideal choice for strategy-game newcomers and for anyone who just wants to unwind with a few relaxed rounds.
