Wipeout Fusion
Wipeout Fusion brought the futuristic anti-gravity racing series Wipeout to the PlayStation 2, continuing the legacy of previous entries long associated with the original PlayStation and its technological and musical style. Players once again pilot fast, hovering craft along tracks that run high above the ground, collect weapons and bonuses, and compete for various racing teams, each with its own visual style, colors and vehicle characteristics.
Compared to previous entries, Fusion added the ability to slightly upgrade and customize craft between races and expanded the range of modes with additional challenges beyond classic races, such as time trials or elimination duels, where the goal is to destroy opponents using weapons. Speed and demanding controls remain at the core of the experience - the game requires precise braking timing in corners and effective use of weapons against opponents on narrow, futuristic circuits. Visually, the game benefited from the PS2's power for smooth, detailed futuristic environments, while the music continued the series' tradition associated with electronic dance music from various well-known artists.
Reception of Wipeout Fusion was more mixed than for previous entries - some players appreciated the brand's return on a new console and the added modes, while others missed the clarity, pace and intuitiveness of controls from the earlier games on PlayStation. The controls remain demanding even for experienced players, since high speeds and narrow passages require quick reflexes and knowledge of the tracks, making the game more of a challenge for patient genre fans than an accessible title for casual players. Nevertheless, the game remains an important part of the Wipeout series' history on PlayStation platforms, and for fans of futuristic racing it represents a typical genre entry that had few direct competitors of comparable quality and visual style on the PS2.
Why play it: For patient fans of futuristic racing, it offers demanding, fast tracks with few direct competitors on the PS2, even though the controls and pacing don't quite match the polish of the series' earlier entries.
