A dark, horror-tinged turn for the series; asylum patients fight to the death to have a wish granted.

Twisted Metal: Black took the vehicular combat series into darker, rawer waters than fans were used to — instead of the lighter tone of previous entries, it offered a grim, at times downright horror-inflected story set in an insane asylum, whose patients fight to the death in their armed vehicles in exchange for having one wish granted, be it revenge, redemption, or some other, far darker goal. Each character had their own dark backstory and unsettling cutscenes shot in a grotesque, comic-book aesthetic, which made the game an unusually bleak experience set against otherwise arcade-style action.

The gameplay itself stayed true to the series' core principle — players destroy opponents across enclosed arenas scattered across a fictional city using weapons mounted on their vehicles, collect power-ups, and make use of each machine's special abilities, from rocket barrages to teleportation, with the choice of vehicle significantly changing both the tactics and pace of individual fights. Compared to earlier entries, Black brought improved physics, more detailed destructible environments, and a darker visual style that made good use of the PlayStation 2's capabilities. The music and sound effects reinforced the bleak, unsettling atmosphere of the whole game and its nighttime city, through which players fight their way from one bizarre arena to the next.

Twisted Metal: Black was received by critics and players alike as a return to the series' roots and one of the best entries ever, praised for its atmosphere, well-balanced multiplayer, and the boldness to push a previously lighthearted brand in a significantly darker direction. To this day it's considered the peak of the vehicular combat series on the PlayStation 2, and its grim tone went on to inspire later entries in the series. For fans of the genre, it remains one of the must-play titles of the entire console generation. The combination of dark humor, unflinching brutality, and stylish presentation still makes it an exceptionally distinctive experience today.

Why play: For a darker, rawer return to the roots of vehicular combat games that, thanks to its well-balanced multiplayer and dark humor, still stands as the peak of the entire series on PS2.
