Siren
Siren was created under the direction of Keiichi Toyama, creator of the original Silent Hill, and became one of the most demanding and darkest survival horror games of its generation, set in the isolated Japanese village of Hanuda, whose inhabitants were transformed into undead beings called Shibito after a mysterious ritual. The game follows ten interconnected characters whose fates intertwine across a non-linearly told story divided into short, difficult missions, and the player often has to figure out the connections between individual chapters alone, without explicit explanation. The chronological mission map, on which further branches gradually unlock, thus functions as a puzzle whose meaning only becomes clear after several playthroughs.
The game's key and most distinctive mechanic was the so-called Sightjack, allowing the player to temporarily see through enemies' eyes and thereby track their movement as well as whether they had spotted the player, which became an essential survival tool in an environment where direct combat was extremely risky and often best avoided entirely. The player literally learns to read the village through the eyes of others: depending on where a patrolling Shibito is currently looking, they plan short dashes between hiding spots, wait lying in the grass, and pray that the flashlight beam doesn't fall the wrong way. The characters are mostly ordinary civilians with no combat training, so even a plain pipe or a shovel feels like a desperate improvisation.
The game's atmosphere, built on oppressive silence, a static camera perspective, and extremely limited resources, ranked among the most terrifying and also most frustrating experiences of its time due to its notoriously high difficulty. Thanks to its raw, uncompromising approach and original Japanese folklore foundation, Siren earned cult status among horror fans and is still praised today as one of the most nerve-wracking titles of the genre on the PlayStation 2. The game was later followed by a loose sequel, Siren 2, and a reworked remake, Siren: Blood Curse.
