NBA Street Vol. 2
NBA Street Vol. 2 developed the arcade approach to street basketball from the first entry, and on PlayStation 2 it became one of the most popular sports titles of the entire generation. The game featured teams made up of both current and historical NBA stars, which the player pits against each other in stylized three-on-three matches, where the rules of classic basketball are adapted to a fast, flashy and fluid pace with no stoppages.
The core of the gameplay was flashy combinations of tricks, alley-oops and so-called Gamebreakers - special, visually over-the-top finishing moves that, when successfully performed, awarded the team bonus points and damaged the opponent's basket for the rest of the match. A system of gradually building up energy for these moments gave every match tension and encouraged risky, stylish play instead of traditional, cautious basketball tactics. The game also allowed players to create their own player and gradually enter them into matches against increasingly stronger opponents within the career mode. Visually, the game combined cartoonishly exaggerated player animations with realistic shapes and movements, creating a distinctive, easily recognizable style for the whole series and its sequels.
NBA Street Vol. 2 received extremely positive reviews and is still often considered one of the best arcade sports titles ever, praised for its pace, soundtrack and overall entertainment value, even among players who otherwise didn't follow classic basketball. The ability to play as legends of the past alongside current stars gave the game a special narrative dimension and forced players to adapt their playstyle to their own team's composition. The game significantly influenced the further development of arcade sports games across the whole industry, and on PlayStation 2 it remains among the titles that still hold a very strong reputation among genre fans and frequently appear in rankings of the best sports games of the generation.
Why play it: For fans of arcade sports and even those who otherwise don't follow classic basketball, it offers a fast pace, excellent music and the chance to build a team from legends and current stars alike.
