Digital Devil Saga
Digital Devil Saga, released in 2004, is a JRPG from Atlus that draws on the Shin Megami Tensei universe but tells an entirely self-contained story set in the burned-out city of Junkyard, where gangs called tribes, named after animal totems, fight for survival and the only law is the right of the strongest. The player leads a party of Asuras from the Serpent Riders tribe, who gain the ability to transform into demons and take on their powers after devouring their enemies — a mechanic that tightly links the story to the combat system and gradually reveals what the characters actually are and why they have no memory of it.
Battles are turn-based and build on the improved Press Turn system familiar from Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne — exploiting enemy weaknesses grants extra turns, turning fights into a carefully considered tactical game balanced on a knife's edge of risk and reward, one that rewards closely tracking enemies' elemental resistances and building the party around the situation at hand. The character and demon designs carry the distinctive hand of Kazuma Kaneko, giving the game a visual kinship with the rest of the SMT family, though it's darker and rawer, with recurring motifs of cannibalism, survival, and the gradual loss of humanity.
The game's reception at the time was positive, especially among genre fans who praised the demanding battles and uncompromising atmosphere, even though its particular style and difficulty kept it from ever becoming a mainstream hit beyond the circle of JRPG connoisseurs. The story also ends mid-plot and continues directly into Digital Devil Saga 2, so the two games form a single, unified whole meant to be played back-to-back without a long break between them. Today the title is prized as one of the darker, most underrated JRPGs of the PS2 era, one that Shin Megami Tensei fans happily recommend as essential playing. The game's sound design rests on bleak, industrial music that underscores the hopelessness of the burned-out Junkyard and contrasts with moments of near-human warmth between the party members.
Why play: For Shin Megami Tensei fans looking for demanding battles and an uncompromisingly dark atmosphere — just be aware the story ends mid-plot and only continues in the second installment.
