Total War: Warhammer
Total War: Warhammer is a strategy game from Creative Assembly that, for the first time in the series' history, abandoned a purely historical setting and transplanted the proven formula of turn-based strategy and real-time battles into the fantasy world of Games Workshop's Warhammer Fantasy Battles. Instead of historical empires, the player leads one of four major factions – the human Empire, the undead Vampire Counts, the brutal greenskin Orcs and Goblins, or the proud dwarven Dwarfs – each with its own playstyle, unique units, and distinct objectives on the campaign map of the Old World.
A major new feature is legendary lords, unique heroes with their own abilities, equipment, and story missions, who lead armies into battle and gain experience and new skills over the course of a campaign, much like characters in RPGs. Battles also gained full-fledged magic with schools of spells, flying units, monster-mounted cavalry, and giant creatures such as dragons or trolls, which fundamentally changes tactics compared to historical entries built purely on formations of infantry, cavalry, and artillery. Total War: Warhammer became the foundation of a new fantasy trilogy that Creative Assembly gradually expanded with additional races, legendary lords, and new campaign maps, and it set the direction the series would take in subsequent years alongside its traditional historical titles. The campaign map also includes its own rules for Chaos, whose invasion from the north threatens all factions regardless of how else they compete with one another, adding a shared, inevitable external pressure to the game.
Why play: Total War: Warhammer is an ideal choice for players who love the world of Warhammer or fantasy strategy games in general and want to add magic, monsters, and heroes with their own development and story to the turn-based map and grand battles. It will also appeal to fans of the series' historical entries who want to try the same proven system in a completely different, fantastical setting full of monsters and magic.
