Total War: Shogun 2

Strategie 2011 The Creative Assembly Total War ⏱ Very long · 30+ h ⭐ Must-play

A return to the series' roots in feudal Japan; one of the best-reviewed entries.

Total War: Shogun 2 brought the series, after several entries set in other periods, back to where it all began: feudal Japan. The player, as one of the Japanese clans, strives to unify the country under their rule, with the campaign emphasizing not just military expansion but also politics, trade, and religion, which affect the stability and loyalty of provinces. Battles remain the core of the game, this time featuring Japanese units such as samurai, ashigaru spearmen, or the early firearm in the form of arquebuses, whose introduction changes combat tactics partway through the campaign.

After its experience with previous entries, studio The Creative Assembly focused on streamlining and fine-tuning the gameplay, thanks to which the game ranks among the series' most technically stable and best-balanced titles. Visually, the game focused on the stylized beauty of the Japanese landscape, cherry blossoms, and detailed unit armor, complemented by a soundtrack drawing on Japanese instruments.

A standalone Avatar Conquest mode for online player battles was also added, linking individual battles into a broader map-based campaign between player clans. The combination of fine-tuned mechanics, atmosphere, and accessibility made it one of the best-reviewed entries in the entire series among both fans and critics, helped also by a clear campaign interface that makes it easy to keep track of political relations between the various clans.

Why play it: A great entry point into the Total War series even for newcomers thanks to its polished gameplay and clarity, while also deep enough for veterans looking for the atmosphere of feudal Japan.
