An 18th-century sailing ship MMO with genuine sailing physics; turning into the wind takes forever.

Naval Action transports players to the era of sailing ships of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the age of great naval wars between European powers, offering an open multiplayer world where ships are governed by genuine sailing principles — the need to track wind direction and strength, trim sails, and plan maneuvers dozens of seconds ahead, because turning into the wind takes a long time and can't be rushed. The player gradually builds a career from a small schooner up to giant ships of the line, trades, builds ships, and takes part in battles between national factions and independent players, with the choice of historical faction affecting both port access and the types of vessels available.

The combat system rewards patience and a thorough knowledge of sailing both with and against the wind, because a poorly angled ship can lose speed at exactly the moment it needs to escape or attack from an advantageous position, and regaining lost speed can take whole minutes. The game's economic layer ties production, trade, and warfare between players into a single living world, where losing a ship in battle has real consequences for further play and forces the player to weigh the risk before setting sail. The graphical rendering of the sea, sails, and detailed damage to wooden hulls was among the best the genre had to offer, reinforcing the illusion of genuine sailing-ship warfare, where you can watch sails gradually tear and rigging snap under fire.

Naval Action was praised above all by players seeking an authentic sailing model that other games lacked, though its steep learning curve and focus on multiplayer combat put off some casual would-be players. It remains one of the few titles that devote themselves so thoroughly to the physics of sailing, and for naval history enthusiasts it represents a one-of-a-kind experience.

Why play it: For naval history enthusiasts craving an authentic sailing model that other games don't offer, even though the steep learning curve and focus on multiplayer combat will put off casual players.
