The return of the legendary space strategy series after years of waiting; commanding fleets in 3D space.

Homeworld 3 continued the story of the legendary space strategy series after years of waiting, bringing players back to commanding massive fleets in open, three-dimensional space, where the angle of attack, altitude, and formations all matter. The story takes place generations after the previous installments, when the hyperspace network built by humanity begins to fail, and the player once again finds themselves at the center of a conflict that tests the legacy of the Kushan and their homeworld fleet, journeying across the galaxy in search of traces of an ancient civilization.

The gameplay remains true to the series' principle – units move and fight in all three dimensions, correctly reading the space and using formations is key, and fleet construction combines heavy capital ships with swarms of smaller fighters, bombers, and frigates that complement each other in combined arms. New to this installment are expansive maps with fixed, destructible structures, derelict wrecks, and tight spaces that force the player to think about ambush and reserve tactics differently than in the traditionally empty space plains of previous installments. The graphics engine delivered significantly more detailed ship models, dramatic lighting, and explosion effects that give the battles a cinematic impact, accompanied by music continuing the atmospheric, melancholic tone of the original games, which was always one of the strongest experiences for fans and remains a hallmark of the series even in the third installment.

Reception was more mixed than for previous entries in the series – some players praised the return to visually spectacular space battles and atmosphere, while others pointed out that the game was still being fine-tuned after release, particularly in terms of content and technical polish. Even so, Homeworld 3 once again reminded players why the series was valued for its unique approach to spatial strategy, and for fans of the original games it represents an anticipated, if debated, continuation of a long-dormant legacy that had only rarely returned to the space strategy genre.

Why play: For fans of the original games, it's an anticipated, if debated, continuation of a long-dormant legacy – visually spectacular battles, but with technical rough edges after launch.
